There are conspiracy theorists who will run wild with theories as to *why* all phone calls are recorded, so go nuts. Over the last 8 years, Facebook has compiled a massive database on a billion people’s Likes & Dislikes, which enables businesses to better sell to the consumers. Have you ever noticed how holiday ads pop up in Google or Facebook after you email a friend about their trip? Targetted selling is worth big dollars.
We have even seen Facebook deliberately misuse this power, experimenting on users by filling their Newsfeed with negative stories, and then monitoring their behaviours & responses. Are you only seeing depressed friends’ newsfeeds? Here, try this antidepressant. Are you only seeing stories of break-ins, muggings and robberies? Here, buy a gun, car alarm or security system. Targetted selling to a captive (or created) audience is big dollars.
If the NSA has compiled a trillion phone records, and can data-mine for keywords, seeking likes, dislikes, intentions and preferences, that gives them a very valuable database indeed. The question is, who is the customer?
